Congratulations Dr. Dora Bell - CHHS Teacher of the Year 2012!!!
Dr. Bell’s goal is to prepare her students for both everyday life and for further study of mathematics. She says, “Because of who and what I teach, mostly seniors and advanced placement, my goals are for the students to leave my classroom prepared for their future studies at the college level and to do so as well-adjusted young adults. Given that information, I teach these classes so as to instill in students the need and desire to learn the beauty of mathematics as it relates to the world around them. But, if there are any issues that interfere with learning mathematics, I try to give students the opportunities to have discussions with me about these issues. Students can learn only when their minds are open and ready to receive the knowledge offered to them in a non-threatening environment. I strive to consistently create a student-friendly environment that focuses on academics and the social development of my students.”
Dr. Bell began teaching in 1988 and has since received Master’s, Specialist and Doctorate degrees. She received her Ph.D. from Georgia State University in 1998. She has been teaching at Collins Hill High School since 2007, and she currently teaches Trigonometry and Advanced Placement Calculus. Dr. Bell summarizes her teaching experience by saying, “It has been twenty five years, and to this day, I have never had any regrets. I love my profession even more now than I did then. I believe education is a field that is ever changing, and the effective and inspirational teacher is constantly learning and changing with it. There is never a dull moment.”
Congratulations to Dr. Dora Bell! She will now compete for the Gwinnett County High School Teacher of the Year Award.
